Cellphone, toothpaste can give you pimple •Recipes for beautiful skin

Can’t determine what’s triggering your skin breakouts? Well, it’s easy to blame your breakouts on stress or those three slices of pizza you ate last weekend, but that parade of pimples might instead be due to some lesser-known causes of acne. Rachel Grumman Bender compiles five sneaky pimple producers — and find out which acne remedies will clear your complexion. Your cellphone Taking too many calls on your iPhone could cause a pimple big enough to become a topic of conversation all its own. Pressing your cheek and chin against your phone causes pimple-producing oils to collect. Those oils, as well as acne-causing bacteria, build up along with any bacteria already on your mobile. “It’s called ‘acne mechanica,’ ” explains dermatologist Eric Schweiger, MD, clinical instructor of dermatology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. “It happens to violinists around the chin and football players with the chin strap — it’s [caused by] not letting the pores breathe, and the repetitive motion causes friction. Now we’re seeing it with cellphones.” Redness relief: Clean your phone regularly by wiping it with the same cleansers you use for computer and TV screens. “When you talk on your cellphone, try not to keep it against your face or on the same side each time,” Dr. Katz suggests. Or simply keep clear by using a hands-free device. Your hairstyling products Styling products may fight frizz and leave your locks silky soft, but they can also cause break outs, called “pomade acne,” along your hairline. “The acne comes from oil-based products and cosmetics,” Dr. Katz explains. “A lot of women don’t realise it’s not always their cosmetics causing the break outs, but their hair product that rubs against their face when they’re asleep. It’s comedogenic, and is like putting oil on your skin.” Redness relief: Look for oil-free pomades and gels (even natural oils can block pores, Dr. Katz notes). Also, scan the ingredients label for other acne-triggering additives, including the emulsifier Laureth-23, silicone and petrolatum. When applying styling products, be sure to avoid your hairline and skin, then wash your hands before touching your face, Dr. Schweiger suggests. Another smart move: Wash your pillowcases regularly. They absorb oil, hair products and dirt, all of which can activate acne. Your make out partner If you can’t pin down what’s triggering your pimples, being cheek-to-cheek with your partner might be to blame. There’s even a name for breaking out after making out — “consort acne.” If your guy is wearing hair gel and you cuddle up, the gel can get on your face and cause acne, according to Dr. Katz. “Or, if someone has a lot of oils in their hair and you’re sharing a pillow, the oils can get on your skin and cause break outs,” he says. Redness relief: Ask your partner to use non-comedogenic products and oil-free hairstyling products. That will help keep the pimple-producing ingredients from rubbing off on your skin. Your toothpaste Although a dab of toothpaste is often recommended as an on-the-spot pimple fighter, some people find that fluoride toothpaste actually triggers zits. “We see this when patients switch toothpastes and notice that they’re breaking out,” Dr. Schweiger says. Ingredients such as fluoride and sodium lauryl sulfate may cause irritation and produce pimples. Your water Hard water often leaves a mineral residue on skin. This film can clog pores and bring on break outs. “There are certain minerals in high concentrations in hard water, which may cause irritation like acne or eczema,” Dr. Schweiger says. Redness relief: Save face by installing water filters or purifiers, such as Jonathan Product Beauty Water Shower Purification System. Filters reduce the concentration of heavy metals in water, which can help prevent pimple-causing residue and irritation.

Fairy tale about FG’s nine new varsities

Though the Federal Government established nine new universities as specialised institutions to serve as models, one year after, except probably for Oye-Ekiti, there are no infrastructure on the site of the institutions to show for money expended, Clement Idoko writes. WHEN the Federal Government announced the creation of nine new universities, the focus, according to the Minister of Education, Professor Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i, was to make them specialised institutions and models in terms of infrastructure development. The nine new universities established in 2010 across the six geo-political zones, especially in states that had no Federal university are in Otuoke, Bayelsa State; Dutsin-ma, Katsina State; Dutse, Jigawa State; Wukari, Taraba; Lokoja, Kogi State; Lafia, Nasarawa; Oye-Ekiti State; Ndufu-Alike Ikwo, Ebony State and Kashere, Gombe State. However, to the consternation of many Nigerians, no infrastructural developments have commenced on the site of about 90 per cent of the universities, in spite of the fact that funds have been approved for the projects by the Federal Government. President Goodluck Jonathan had approved N1.5 billion as take-off grant to each of the universities and an additional N2billion each for the nine universities for capital development, all to the tune of N31.5 billion last year. Also, about eight of the universities, which have commenced academic programmes, admitted less than 3,000 students. Although, the National Universities Commission (NUC) approved an admission quota of 500 for each of the institution, Education Tribune gathered that the universities could not fill the quota largely because of lack of infrastructure to accommodate the students. Investigation revealed that the ninth University, sited in President Jonathan’s home town, is yet to commence academic activities as a result of the recent flood disaster that ravaged some parts of the country, including the community. The Vice Chancellor of the university located in Otuoke, Professor Bolaji Aluko, who confirmed the development said work was yet to commence on the site of the university because of the terrain. He also explained that he had asked the contractors for execution of projects in the school to hold on for the ongoing construction of access roads on the project site being handled by the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC). The recent meeting held by the Minister of State for Education, Nyesom Wike, with the ministry officials, consultants, contractors, vice chancellors of the universities and representatives of the NUC and Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) was very revealing. The meeting showed that there was no proper coordination and monitoring of the execution of the projects in the institutions. For instance, Mr Wike was aghast that majority of the contractors, months after signing contract agreements with the Permanent Secretary and the legal adviser of the Federal Ministry of Education have never been to the site of the universities to collect contract documents. In fact, both contractors and ministry officials traded blames on the delay in the execution of the projects, which involved the construction of lecture halls, libraries and administrative blocks. The minister, in his opening remark said: “The vice chancellors maybe surprised at this meeting, but it is the truth; that is the way I operate. For one year now, Mr. President gave approval for projects in the nine new universities and we have been moving from one state to other, but the reports we are getting is not satisfactory at all. “The usual thing, in my experience as I have found out, is that when these things happen, sometimes they blame the ministry, sometimes, the ministry will blame contractors, and sometimes contractors blame those who are the recipients, (that is the universities). When you meet with the vice chancellors, they will give another version because the ministry representatives are not there. Also, when you meet NUC, NUC will give you a different story and when you call the consultants, they too have their own stories. So, what I have decided to do is to bring all of you together because we want to know what the problems are. “Why is it that for one year now that these projects have been approved and I do know that award letters have been given, and the report I’m getting is that 90 per cent of the site, nothing is happening. Some contractors have complained that up till now, they have not gotten the full detail of the drawings and all sorts of stories. So, I want to find out from the universities or from NUC, or that they have done everything and nobody is there to pay them and so the contractors are not willing to do their job or they have refused to cooperate with the universities to make sure that the job is being done. That is why we have come for this meeting. “We are not interested in these stories, theories and so on. Something has to be done because there is no reason to justify that for one year, funds have been made available, approvals have been given, and up till now, we are still talking about processes to start up the job. “Nigerians are eager that we have opened new universities and government is willing to make sure that not only do we open new universities, there must be projects; there should be facilities that people will say yes, not that they have just opened universities, but the government is serious about providing the necessary infrastructure. “Everyday, we are telling Nigerians that government has opened new universities, government has promised this, and people are not seeing anything on ground,” he said. Wike, vowed to apply sanction on any errant contractor or officials of the Federal Ministry of Education found to be involved in sabotaging the government efforts at realising the desired objective of opening up access to tertiary education in the country. It was also discovered at the occasion that funds voted for the projects were actually released by the Tertiary Education Trust to the NUC on January 3, 2013 as directed by President Jonathan. Deputy Executive Secretary of NUC, Mr. Akinbode Agbaoye who represented the commission at the meeting confirmed the release of funds to the commission. What was also revealed at the meeting was that some contractors were ignorant of the provisions in contract award letters requiring them to visit the respective universities to collect their contract documents, which included drawings for individual buildings and bills of quantities. The procurement department of the Federal Ministry of Education in their briefing told the minister that they have had meeting with all the universities and Physical Planning Directors chaired by the Permanent Secretary by first week of December, 2012. According to them, copies of letters of awards, which were given to all contractors, were presented to them at the meeting. “We handed over all the bills of quantities and all the drawings of individual buildings to all the directors at a meeting here first week of December, 2012”. Ministry officials, had also noted that contractors were sent to the universities, but said most of them have come back to report to the ministry that they were not given sites, drawings, and that in some cases the universities would tell the contractors that they were not ready for the implementation. But the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Kashare, Gombe State, Prof. Mohammed El-Yakub, disputed this when he disclosed that he has been waiting for the contractors but none of them has been to the university. The minister was angry that while the contractors were told in the letters of awards to go the universities and get the drawings and documents for the implementation of the projects but most of them have refused to do this. Paragraph four of the letter states: “You are to liaise with the Physical Planning Department of the university to collect contract documents within one week of signing of the agreement”. Education Tribune, however, gathered from the ministry officials that the delay in the release of funds for the projects was caused by the initial opposition to the establishment of the universities by the National Assembly until August 2012 when the Senate passed the bills establishing them. However, experts have begun to express concern that the nine new universities might go the way of the other public institutions in Nigeria, where lack of infrastructure have become the major challenge. They gave an example of the University of Abuja, established several years ago but which was temporarily located in a primary school in Gwagwalada, until the current Vice Chancellor, Professor James Adelabu moved most of the faculties to the permanent site along Airport road. This has also partly accounted for the current crisis bedeviling the university over accreditation.

W/Cup qualifier: NFF awaits Keshi’s list for Kenya match

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has said it is still waiting on the Super Eagles coach Stephen Keshi to forward the provisional list of players to be invited for the March 23 World Cup qualifying match with the Harambee Stars of Kenya. A member of the Technical Committee of the NFF Paul Bassey said on Lagos sport radio station Brila FM on Monday that the Glass House was yet to get any list from the ‘Big Boss’. According to him, once the list is drawn up by Keshi, it will be promptly deliberated upon to fast track preparations for the crunch World Cup qualifier. “We are still expecting the list from Stephen Keshi, once it is in, the technical committee will sit to discuss the list,” Bassey said. Already, there are reports that the list will soon be at the Glass House and should be made public by the end of the month as the Calabar camp of the Eagles is meant to open in the first week of next month. The Nigeria Premier League stars are expected to set the ball rolling before the foreign legion jet in to complement the squad.

WIZKID EXCLUSIVE: ‘It’s Been Blessings For Me’

After releasing his debut album ‘Superstar’ Ayodeji ‘Wizkid’ Balogun hasn’t looked back. Scoring number one hits, collaborating with international acts, winning world recognized awards and working up his way to A-list status, his nickname ‘Starboy’ might now be looking like an understatement. In this exclusive interview, the 22-year-old tells about his experiences performing overseas, working with Akon, Wale, Young Jeezy, and why he feels he’s with the best team. In one word, describe what the past year has been for you? Blessing, it has been a blessing. After the release of your debut album ‘Superstar’, who made decisions to go on tour or travel out of Nigeria? I feel like everything just happened. It was funny because everything kept on happening, there was nothing we planned for, it was just God. Big shout out to my fans as well because after I released the album, I was getting calls from all over the world for bookings. I could say it’s by my hard work, though. Of course everyone else is working hard, but you just have to have that x-factor, and that’s what has been pushing me on. Where did you enjoy performing the most, the UK or US? It was a totally different experience because in the UK, we have a lot of Nigerians living in one community, but in the US people are scattered all over, you have some people staying in New York, Minnesota, New Jersey. That’s the difference. Everywhere I went to, it was a different kind of love, because some people didn’t even think that I would come for the concert, because they felt like ‘why would Wizkid come to Minnesota or some funny place in the United States?’ It was a just a different experience for me. How was it, working with the likes of Akon, Wale, Kardinal Offishall, The Game and Young Jeezy? It was crazy, because I was at BET, then I was invited for a dinner. Wale has always been my friend, and [I'm also friends with] Bu, who’s Akon‘s younger brother. He came there with Young Jeezy and introduced me, and that was how I started work with him. When we recorded the first song, everybody loved it, [and] before I knew it The Game came in and heard the song and said he had to jump on it. We booked another session for the next day, then came back and recorded. Chris Brown and every other person came through, and it was a great feeling. I felt blessed. Do you think not having a specific genre as an artiste has helped you have an edge over Nigerian artistes? I wouldn’t say I have an edge over all other artistes because everybody has their own talent, but I’ll just say it’s my thing. It’s something God has blessed me with and I have worked very hard with it. It’s not just that I sit down and it comes to me, I try to surf for inspiration, and I think it has really helped me to be the ‘Wizkid’ that I am. People don’t get surprised by what I do, they feel like I can come up with any style, so it has helped me. So which other international artistes have you worked with that we don’t know of? I don’t want to let the cat out of the bag because people know almost all the ones I’ve worked with, so I will keep the others a secret till the time comes. How did you find time to record your forth-coming album while you were busy on tour? I am a workaholic, I’m a studio rat. In London, after the concerts I went back to the studio to do my thing,. It’s the love for music that keeps me going. What is the energy behind you recording and performing? It’s just because I love it. If you love your job then it’s no longer a job. It becomes a part of you. I don’t complain about doing my job, and my fans show me a lot of love. What do you think is behind all this growth after your first single ‘Holla at your boy‘? Firstly, it’s God, because everybody works hard, but it’s whom God has blessed that excels. So I just feel he is the one behind all these things happening, and also the fact that I have a solid team behind me handling my business. What is the difference between when it was just you, Banky W, and Skales in the EME crew, to the new family now? It was Banky and I even before Skales (Laughs). The dream at that time was to build an empire, bring some artistes, and build them on the same platform. It’s just a dream coming true, and it’s something we have always wished to do. We just made sure we built the empire, [and] I just thank God that everything is working out well. EME has always been about how good you are, not how well dressed you are. Banky W postponed his album for the team to release the compilation; would you ever take that bullet for the team? I [also] didn’t release an album this year just because of the EME album. I was supposed to release an album on June 12 this year, [but] I put that aside, which is a big sacrifice for me. For someone that works hard like I do and [has] a lot of materials, yeah, I’ve taken a bullet already (Laughs). How was the experience recording the EME album? It was easy. From day one it has always been about ‘what do you have now, let’s put it together and make something crazy.’ So when we were recording the album it was exciting. I’m glad we made it happen. What does the wizkid brand stand for? It stands for an ambitious young man who is trying fulfill his dreams. A lot of people come to me and say they want to be like me, I just feel overwhelmed by it and I’m happy and thank God. Do you feel at the top of your career? I am not anywhere close right now, I’m just starting. Every day when I wake up in the morning I feel like ‘what am I going to do today?’ You were nominated at the Channel O Awards but didn’t win. How did you feel? I didn’t feel anyhow, I have gone through a lot of awards that I didn’t win at all, which is no stress for me. My fans still show me love and I have a couple of other awards, so I’m good with it. Have you turned down any sort of endorsements? I have turned down a couple of endorsement because the business is not want I want to associate myself with; I’ve got Pepsi right now. Where did the rumour of you leaving EME come from? We have heard that news; I guess some people thought of saying something funny. Why did you part ways with your manager Osagie Osarenkhoe? It was a business decision, because the brand is growing. She’s still working with a couple of other EME artistes to push their brands. She is still part of the team, we just needed more hands. How has working with your new manager Godwin Tom been? It’s been great.

Why we are probing NNPC $1.56 bn loan deal - Tambuwal

SPEAKER of the House of Representatives, Honourable Aminu Tambuwal, on Monday, stated that the resolve by the House to probe the proposed $1.56 billion loan deal by the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) was because there was no provision for such loan in the 2013-2015 Medium Term Framework and the 2013 budget currently awaiting President Goodluck Jonathan’s assent. He stated this while declaring open the investigative hearing organised by the House Joint Committee on Petroleum Resources (upstream and downstream), Aids, Loans and Debt Management and Justice detailed by the House to probe the loan deal. The speaker, represented by the House Chief Whip, Honourable Ishiaka Bawa, said the findings and recommendations of the panel would influence the direction and decisions of the parliament. According to him, “the issue before us today for consideration, the proposed $1.56 billion loan by the NNPC, is very important. Its importance is predicated on the fact that the proposed loan was neither captured in the 2013-2015 Medium Term Framework, nor the 2013 budget.” He added that “members of the Seventh Assembly are fully committed to bringing the dividends of democracy to our people, and ensuring that we have a policy that we shall all be proud of. It is on account of this belief that the House in its wisdom referred this matter to the committees on Petroleum Resources (upstream and downstream), aids, loans and debt management and Justice to investigate fully and report back to the House.” He said further that,”We are convinced that your findings and recommendations will greatly influence the direction that the House will take, and therefore urge you to do a thorough job. As leaders, we must be sensitive to the needs of our people and do only those things that will reflect us in a positive light”. However, the Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs Dieziani Allison-Madueke and the Group Managing Director (GMD), NNPC, Andrew Yakubu while addressing the panel denied obtaining such amount of loan. The duo rather maintained that the said money in question was not a loan but a forward sales agreement between the Corporation and its trading partners in lieu of the Corporation’ s indebtedness to them. The NNPC boss specifically told the panel that, “the arrangement is based on a forward sale which allows a future sale of agreed quantities of 15,000 bpd of crude oil to a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) for a period of up to five years in consideration of the sum of US$1.5 Billion paid by the SPV to NNPC. The US$1.5 Billion will be used to off-set part of the petroleum imports bills”.

EFCC rearrests Akingbola, as Jonathan sacks judge over his trial

THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), said it has re-arrested former managing director of Intercontinental Bank Plc (now Access Bank Plc), Mr Erastus Akingbola. In a press statement released to the media on Monday, the EFCC stated that Mr Akingbola “is currently being held at the commission’s facility in Ikoyi, Lagos, preparatory to his arraignment today (Tuesday), before Justice Adeniyi Onigbanjo of the Lagos High Court on fresh charges of stealing.” The commission noted that the planned re-arraignment “is sequel to the elevation of the former trial judge, Justice Habeeb Abiru of the Lagos High Court to the Court of Appeal.” The Commission has also arrested the son of former governor of Kogi State, Prince Abubakar Audu, Mustapha Audu and his wife, Zahrah Audu over an alleged property scam to the tune of N18million. A statement issued by the commission’s spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren read in part: “The duo through their company, constructors Guild Limited, obtained the sum from one Nike Kolawole under the guise of helping her secure choice properties in Katampe Extension, and Caemly Estate, Idu Sabo, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja. “They will be arraigned at Federal High Court 12, Maitama, Abuja.” Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the recommended compulsory retirement of Justice Charles Efanga Archibong over the handling of the corruption trial of Akingbola. The National Judicial Council recommended his sack and suspended him. A statement issued by council’s spokesperson, Soji Oye stated that “President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has approved the compulsory retirement of Hon. Justice Charles Efanga Archibong of the Federal High Court, Lagos Division with immediate effect. “The approval is sequel to the recommendation of the National Judicial Council at its emergency meeting which was held on Wednesday 20th February, 2013 under the chairmanship of the Hon. Chief Justice of Nigeria, Hon. Justice Aloma Mariam Mukhtar, GCON. “The President has also on the recommendation of the National Judicial Council, approved the extension of the appointment of the Acting President of the Court of Appeal, Hon. Justice Zainab Adamu Bulkachuwa, OFR, pursuant to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended.” Meanwhile, the Ogun State Youth Forum has commended President Jonathan for approving the NJC’s recommendation for compulsory retirement of Justice Archibong, the judge, who gave the judgment that the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) National Working Committee (NWC) premised its decision of February 15, 2013 on.
